 eClub's Adopt A Minefield Project for 2005/6

Every 27 minutes somebody, somewhere, is killed or maimed by a landmine; as many as a third of victims are children.

Millions more people live hundreds of miles away from minefield in urban slums because their villages and land are mine affected.

Economic and social development depends upon people having safe access to their land. Without mine action other development is severely impaired.

Adopt-A-Minefield Achievements

Since being established in 1999 the Adopt-A-Minefield global campaign has raised over £8 million. This has money has cleared over 20.8 million square metres of land benefited over 400,000 people cleared 291 minefields, helping nearly 300 communities in 9 of most mine-impacted countries in the world funded 63 survivor assistance projects.

The campaign has also indirectly benefited millions more people by clearing routes to allow the return of refugees and internally displaced people clearing access for humanitarian workers carrying food and water clearing major infrastructure such as electrical grids or irrigation systems to provide energy or water to entire regions clearance of agricultural land or factories to provide jobs to a larger population getting a survivor back to work benefits an entire extended family by providing a regular source of income and enabling parents to enroll their children in school

Update 07/09/06

Officials have announced the death of a British soldier in Afghanistan in a landmine explosion in an unmarked minefield in the Helmand province which also injured six other soldiers, five seriously. This tragedy is one of many caused by landmines which kill or injure both troops and innocent civilians in the Afghanistan.

It is estimated that in Afghanistan there are 100 new civilian mine/UXO casualties each month. However, many mine casualties are believed to die before reaching medical assistance and are therefore not recorded. As well as the death and long term injury caused by landmines their presence prevents access by NGOs to provide emergency aid to those who most need it.

Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign

Adopt-A-Minefield raises awareness and funds to clear landmines and help survivors of landmine accidents. 100% of all donations to Adopt-A-Minefield UK are applied to Mine Action. We offer an opportunity for everyone to make a difference. It costs about £1 pound to clear a square metre, as little as £50 to help a child walk again.

Funds raised through Adopt-A-Minefield are disbursed through the United Nations to the local and international organisations doing the work on the ground in Abkhazia, Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Croatia, Laos, Mozambique and Vietnam.

Adopt-A-Minefield UK is a programme of The No More Landmines Trust (Charity No. 1110770) and works together with its partner Adopt-A-Minefield campaigns in the US, Canada, and Sweden. Heather Mills McCartney and Paul McCartney are the founding patrons of Adopt-A-Minefield UK.
