Greetings from Cardiff Bay Rotary Club.
We received our charter in 1989 at a time when Cardiff
Bay was thousands of acres of industrial wasteland after industries that had
built up around what was once the worlds largest port went into decline. The
founding members of the Club had the choices of many more glamorously sounding
names but had the confidence that the new Bay area would develop as they saw
they would in their contribution to Rotary.
In 1999 the £197m Cardiff Barrage scheme was
completed creating a 500 acres freshwater lake and 8 miles of water front
walks. Development soon followed to make Cardiff one of the fastest growing
cities in Europe. Our banner reflects the proud past of Cardiff Docks:
- the red brick Pierhead Building that housed the
Harbour Master as he supervised the daily operations that took Welsh Coal to
the four corners of the British empire, making Cardiff the world's largest
port.
- The outline of the ship 'Terra Nova' and its
association with Captain Scott's last expedition to Antarctica.
The Club still hovers around 25 members; the Club's
demands on its members are quite high as the activities and projects well
surpasses many much larger Clubs. The most recent project that captured
national tv coverage was 'Message in a Bottle' for details of this and others
such as our fundraising car parking in conjunction with events at the
Millennium Stadium please visit our website at
