At a ceremony in Marlborough House on Wednesday 2
November 2005, the Pakistan Women's Empowerment Group (WEG) paid tribute to the
support their breast Cancer Awareness Campaign had received from Cherie Booth
QC.
WEG mounted its nationwide Pink Ribbon Campaign in
2004, to create awareness of the disease that will help reduce breast cancer
mortality amongst Pakistani women. A first for Pakistan, and the first ever
Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in an Islamic country, it has already won
awards for WEG and public relations consultancy PIELLEVision
2015. |
Omer Aftab, executive director of WEG, said: " The
public support we received from Cherie Booth QC provided real encouragement and
strengthened our resolve at an important time for our Pink Ribbon Campaign. She
gives enormous support to the causes of breast cancer and women's rights, much
of it behind the scenes - an important factor for every volunteer organisation
set up to tackle these issues.
One of the group of young professional who established
WEG in 1999, Aftab was speaking at the launch of WEG as an international
charity. Based in London, the charity is dedicated to supporting the work of
WEG Pakistan, and making its expertise available in developing countries and
emerging economies, to organisations committed to development by empowering
women as the builders of the future.
"In the immediate future, WEG's role in supporting and
empowering women will be of significant importance as part of the recovery
programme in those areas of our country, as well as those of our neighbours in
India that are so tragically impacted by earthquakes. Future recovery of those
communities will depend to a large measure to us being able to support women
and families who live there." |
