Five of the far flung eClub members - notebook PCs in
hand - welcomed twenty guests to York Gate
It
was one of those rare Rotary occasions when the IT worked almost flawlesly
enabling most of us to connect to net via WiFi, decorate the wall with
Powerpoint presentations and even link our distant President Elect via
Skype!
DG
Robert had already delivered his usual club address online so he only had to
make a brief introduction to guest of honour RIBI President Mike Webb. Mike was
also brief reminding us that most of his stuff was online too. Indeed he was
here to hear how an eClub was organised - as the answer was "we are still
making it up as we go" he echoed our sense of anarchy by confiding that if he
could only acheive one wish for changing Rotary - it would be the the
subjugation of the Rule Book. A wish that brought smiles and even a
cheer!
President Stella had two key tasks - to induct our new
member Rachid Karoo (above right) and present the eClub's first donation
to our sponsored project Adopt-A-Minefield.
Perhaps not too coincidentally AAM's Director Keith
Kelly is a founder member of the eClub and gave an informal but absorbing talk
on the practical issues of saving lives and returning land to productive use.
Keith made the strong point that this was the time to finally solve the
minefield problem that has plagued the world for nearly a century. The efforts
of Princess Diana and others had achieved an effective moratorium on the
productuion and laying of new mines. In the last ten years the clearances had
already halved the incidence of casulties. But it was still one casulty every
half hour somewhere in the world ...
President Stella also provided most of the lunch which
was very much enjoyed and encouraged everybody to meet and talk.
The after lunch sessions sketched out the achievements
to date and some of the options and ideas for the growth of service raising
revenue through our unique opportunity as the UK's only online
