Make Up Opportunity - Support a Clinic in Zimbabwe

Are you doing a 'make-up'?

Do you want to support a worthwhile project?

Your donations will help us support a clinic in Zimbabwe suffering with a chronic lack of electricity.

You can do a 'make-up' by visiting our website, spending 30 minutes with us and, provided we know in advance, even participate in our meetings

-The entrance to the Clinic-

Following our recent intervention with Nkulumane Clinic in Bulawayo, the Rotary E-club of London Centenary is now raising funds for a solar-powered light at the entrance to the maternity clinic in Zimbabwe.

This clinic is in the rural and rather arid area around Bulawayo, and the only means of help for women in the district when giving birth. Currently thieves lie in wait for the vulnerable women, going into the hospital to have their babies. These women, with cash in their pockets for the fees, are very easy targets.

The dark and unwelcoming atmosphere provides a perfect haven for the crooks and a solar light allowing them to pass safely is essential if they are to reach that help without fear of an ambush.

Your donations for this make-up can be as low as £5 to this cause (but more would be very gratefully received). We are working through the Rotary Club of Borrowdale Brooke in Harare and through an ex member of that club who has joined the Rotary e-Club of London. You can rest assured the funds will go directly to the cause, with nothing taken for administration.

For this phase of the project we would like now to provide funding for the installation of a solar-powered street light, which would provide security of external access during night-time to the clinic at no maintenance cost, and some more solar-powered internal lighting for key indoor areas of the clinic.

The costs associated with these two project components are £1,350 for the street light and £650 for the internal lighting.

We would like to express our sincere thanks in advance for your contribution.

The E-Club of Rotary Centenary recently triumphed with a vital donation to the Maternity Clinic in Nkulumane. Working with two local clubs and a non-governmental organization the E-club was able to facilitate vital hot water requirements for the clinic suffering from 16-21 hour daily power cuts.

Before this much needed support, the Nkulumane Clinic in Bulawayo was in a very bad situation. The maternity section of the hospital had to operate by candlelight during the night, as unfortunately babies do not wait for the daytime hours to be delivered! The need for hot water to be available and for the sterilization of equipment for baby births is well chronicled but when there is no power there is no hot water and the clinic was desperate.

Clinic staff report that the work already undertaken is making huge impact. Since the hot water system and internal lighting were installed the child mortality
rate is down by 45% from losses in the theatre.

Said Cynthia Grund, member and PHF from Greve in Denmark, "When solar energy is so inexpensive, we need to concentrate on utilising our hard earned funds in such projects where we can get so much for so little, in terms of money"

The eClub of London Centenary is a club that meets each week on-line and includes
members from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the UK.
